According to Census 2011, Delhi has population of 1.68 Crores, an increase from figure of 1.39 Crore in 2001 census. Total population of Delhi as per 2011 census is 16,787,941 of which male and female are 8,987,326 and 7,800,615 respectively. In 2001, total population was 13,850,507 in which males were 7,607,234 while females were 6,243,273. The total population growth in this decade was 21.21 percent while in previous decade it was 46.31 percent. The population of Delhi forms 1.39 percent of India in 2011. In 2001, the figure was 1.35 percent.

Delhi Literacy Rate Census 2011

Literacy rate in Delhi has seen upward trend and is 86.21 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy stands at 90.94 percent while female literacy is at 80.76 percent. In 2001, literacy rate in Delhi stood at 81.67 percent of which male and female were 87.33 percent and 74.71 percent literate respectively. In actual numbers, total literates in Delhi stands at 12,737,767 of which males were 7,194,856 and females were 5,542,911

According to the Census of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, the decade of 2001 to 2011 is the 1st decade post Indian Independence, which added least number of people to the country's population. The percentage of decadal growth in the nation, for the first time, showed a decrease by 3.90 % since, the present Census of India 2011 has registered the rate to be 17.64 % from the rate of 21.54 % in the earlier Census conducted in the year 2001

In rural regions of Delhi state, female sex ratio per 1000 males was 852 while same for the child (0-6 age) was 814 girls per 1000 boys. In Delhi, 56,716 children (0-6) live in rural areas. Child population forms 13.53 percent of total rural population. In rural areas of Delhi, literacy rate for males and female stood at 89.37 % and 60.87 %. Average literacy rate in Delhi for rural areas was 81.86 percent. Total literates in rural areas were 296,600.

Out of total population of Delhi, 97.50% people live in urban regions. The total figure of population living in urban areas is 16,368,899 of which 8,761,005 are males and while remaining 7,607,894 are females. The urban population in the last 10 years has increased by 97.50 percent. Sex Ratio in urban regions of Delhi was 868 females per 1000 males. For child (0-6) sex ratio the figure for urban region stood at 873 girls per 1000 boys. Total children (0-6 age) living in urban areas of Delhi were 1,955,738. Of total population in urban region, 11.95 % were children (0-6). Average Literacy rate in Delhi for Urban regions was 86.32 percent in which males were 90.98% literate while female literacy stood at 69.06%. Total literates in urban region of Delhi were 12,441,167.
