The percentage of decadal growth in the nation, for the first time, showed a decrease by 3.90 % since, the present Census of India 2011 has registered the rate to be 17.64 % from the rate of 21.54 % in the earlier Census conducted in the year 2001

Total population of rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir state was 9,108,060. The population growth rate recorded for this decade (2001-2011) was 72.62%. In rural regions of Jammu and Kashmir state, female sex ratio per 1000 males was 908 while same for the child (0-6 age) was 865 girls per 1000 boys. In Jammu and Kashmir, 1,593,008 children (0-6) live in rural areas. Child population forms 17.49 percent of total rural population. In rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir, literacy rate for males and female stood at 73.76 % and 46.00 %. Average literacy rate in Jammu and Kashmir for rural areas was 63.18 percent. Total literates in rural areas were 4,747,950.
Out of total population of Jammu and Kashmir, 27.38% people live in urban regions. The total figure of population living in urban areas is 3,433,242 of which 1,866,185 are males and while remaining 1,567,057 are females. The urban population in the last 10 years has increased by 27.38 percent. Sex Ratio in urban regions of Jammu and Kashmir was 840 females per 1000 males. For child (0-6) sex ratio the figure for urban region stood at 850 girls per 1000 boys. Total children (0-6 age) living in urban areas of Jammu and Kashmir were 425,897. Of total population in urban region, 12.41 % were children (0-6). Average Literacy rate in Jammu and Kashmir for Urban regions was 77.12 percent in which males were 83.92% literate while female literacy stood at 56.65%. Total literates in urban region of Jammu and Kashmir were 2,319,283.
